THE MARCHING 101 Audition Process

We welcome you to join our legacy of excellence! If you have already completed your application, submitted all documents and received your acceptance email, please move to the next step.

In order to receive Federal aid, Students are encouraged to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) immediately. This application can be completed below.

Over the years, we've had the privilege of collaborating with some amazing musicians and band directors. These collaborations have helped shape our sound and push us to new creative heights. If you are ready to join the Marching 101, let's get you prepared for your audition. Below are the audition requirements for sections.

SC STATE WOODWIND/BRASS AUDITIONS

Welcome to the audition section of THE MARCHING 101!

Our band is a blend of different musical styles and genres, each member bringing their own flavor to the mix. From funky bass lines to soaring section fanfares, we create music that gets your feet tapping, body moving, and your heart pumping. Our performances are an experience like no other, with plenty of surprises and audience interaction. We love to connect with our fans and share our passion for music with the world. Join us on this musical journey!

1. Each auditioning member must perform a prepared piece (Any Honor Band, All-State or District Honor Band pieces are acceptable)

Auditions can be completed in person at SC State University, at a local band audition or college fair, or virtually.

Virtual Auditions will need to be recorded and the video uploaded to YouTube. The link will need to be saved as “unlisted” and submitted to Dr. Steven Reid at sreid18@scsu.edu, Mr. Albert J. Shuler at ashuler4@scsu.edu and cc: band@scsumarching101.org.

Percussion, please submit audition videos to the above-mentioned emails and include Mr. Marcus McCluney at mcclune@scsu.edu.

Once Accepted:

Step 1: Pay Your Enrollment Deposit

If you are committed to joining the SC State University and Marching 101 Family, you will need to confirm your enrollment and complete the enrollment process along with signing up for Pre-Drill 2024. Listed are the next steps once you have been accepted. These steps in the process can be completed prior to your audition or afterwards pending your successful admittance to the University.

Step 1: Pay Your Enrollment Deposit

Your $160 enrollment deposit is required to secure your spot in the incoming class. Please note that the Office of Undergraduate Admissions is monitoring the class size and reserves the right to wait list a student at any time as the class reaches capacity. Hence, it is encouraged that you pay your enrollment deposit as soon as possible.

Electronically transfer your Tax Information using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool
Apply for SCSU Scholarships online through the student portal

Housing will be coordinated through the housing office with the band office assisting. Once you have officially confirmed your enrollment with the University, and the band, you will be placed on a listing for Band Housing. You are about to embark on a journey like no other. we are glad that you have chosen to join us!
This form will capture all important information so that we can make sure that you have everything you need once you arrive to campus.
An email will be sent you outlining everything you will need for the start of Band Camp.

What determines eligibility for a scholarship?

Your playing ability and our instrumentation needs.

Do only Music Majors receive band scholarships?

No. Our band is comprised of several other academic majors across campus.

Can I audition even if I have not been accepted?

Yes, you may audition, but your offer is not considered valid until you are an enrolled student at SC State.

Once I audition, how long does it take to receive an offer?

Offers for scholarships may be extended on the same day of audition however, usually, you will receive an offer (via email) in 5-10 business days after auditioning.

Can I play more than one instrument in the band? Which instrument should I audition on?

We suggest that you audition on your strongest instrument. Scholarships are determined based on your audition so you want to do your best. Secondary instruments can be played in Concert Band or Jazz Band. There is an exception which are DOUBLE REED Instruments. If Double Reed is your primary instrument, and you play another instrument, you will play your secondary instrument.
